I met Manuel at a FAVA [Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta] screening in October 2007. After our first conversation I knew that I wanted to work with him on a film. I found Manuel to have a strong and unique presence as an artist– part of it had to do with his uncommon background and sharp mind. But what really impressed me was his linguistic sensibility and passion for the craft of filmmaking (important qualities for a film actor). Manuel’s subdued charisma, which comes across in person and on screen, is partly a result of these qualities.
Six months later, when I began writing and storyboarding my latest film, I asked Manuel if he would be interested in playing the role of a depression-era character who goes to fight in the Spanish Civil War. A part requiring historical awareness was perfect for Manuel. His positive reaction and commitment to the project became essential to what would end up being a very successful film shoot in the Alberta Badlands.
After discussing the historical context of the film and making reference to appropriate literature and films, Manuel came to the first rehearsal with a thorough understanding of the script, storyboard and general scenario. As soon as he began reading his lines, I could see his character come to life through a truthful and very natural interpretation. Throughout subsequent discussions and over a one month period, Manuel continued to refine his work, and was very well-prepared for the two days of shooting – his performance was excellent. He worked hard to meet the rigorous demands of a celluloid shoot, and his attention to detail and enthusiasm never dissipated.
Manuel is an extremely talented actor. He finds the voice and demeanor of his character through a process of intelligent exploration. Upon first contact, he asks questions, gathers information, and shares insight – all this in preparation for a performance that will feel authentic and effortless. He loves every aspect of the story-telling process and will work hard with other cast members to find the best possible delivery. Any director will appreciate his solid work ethic and passion, which is contagious throughout rehearsal and on the set.
I consider it a privilege to have worked with Manuel. He is an artist that understands the craft of filmmaking and has a gift for bringing words to life in a manner that is faithful to a story’s context.

Meeting Manuel at the arts residence where I live, I was immediately interested in his European descent and the fact that he had recently left Ireland. These things gave him a unique and worldly experience. Being a university professor in linguistics as well gave him a fascinating intellectual side. Furthermore of course, he was also an actor, and within moments of me picking up a guitar, we were excitedly discussing Ennio Morricone and cinema in general. We seemed to share an appreciation for many similar things.
I mentioned my current production to him and soon we met to view promos. His reaction was intense, agreeing to do some tests. I saw a nostalgic quality in Manuel's physical features given his French background and I thought it would be great for a project inspired by silent, foreign and classic cinema. This was furthered greatly
by seeing promotional photos and witnessing his overall intensity acting on the stage. Letting no grass grow underfoot, Manuel prompted me to do the tests within days. After only moments of seeing him through the lens it was evident that he was the man for the role.
From that point on Manuel threw himself into the role, literally, given that this was a silent part requiring great physical effort and intelligent, imaginative acting. His commitment to the shoots and his craft was inspiring, and I was surprised at how willing, quick and capable he was at adapting to adversity and the ease with which he worked with other actors. We had our moments, but not once did I come away from a day’s work unsatisfied.
Beyond that, his resourcefulness has been integral to the project, helping to find other actors and various contributors, lending another dimension to his dedication to the success of this endeavour. Fact is, some people merely talk about these things and others actually do them, and that is how I would describe this fellow. Serious and professional, and I would recommend him to anyone looking for the talents of an inspired and motivated artist in this field. He is quite a character and I'm glad to know him.

It is during rehearsals for a public reading of Roger Parent’s "Le Festin" (The Feast, directed by Bernard Salva at the Campus Saint-Jean) that I first witnessed Manuel’s instinctive and intense stage presence.
When the UniThéâtre called on me to direct Michel Marc Bouchard’s "Le voyage du Couronnement", I immediately thought of Manuel for one of the most demanding roles. The role of Jérôme, a manipulating diplomat haunted by the horrors of the war, required a rigor, a self-control, a presence and an elegance that Manuel naturally possesses.
I was indeed not disappointed in casting him for this role. Very generous towards his fellow actors, always open to directorial explorations, Manuel brought all his passion to this theatre experience.
Manuel is an in-depth actor, always inclined to further research and further reflexion for better inhabiting his characters. He also has a work ethics that makes him a punctual, perfectionnist and viable artist.
